According to a statement on its X page, NEMA said “the floods caused extensive destruction to markets, schools, religious centers, police stations, and operational vehicles between May and June 2024.”

The agency conducted an evaluation of the flood incident on June 12.

Also present at the evaluation were representatives of Jakande Estate, including representatives of the House of Representatives member for the area, Attah Thaddeus.

According to the NEMA statement, many of the collapsed buildings had structural deficiencies and some of them had been marked earlier for demolition by the state government.

“At the period of assessment, some of the homeless were seen under makeshift tents under unhealthy conditions,” the statement said.

“Others were accommodated by friends and loved ones living within the estate.”
