NLC, TUC declare indefinite nationwide strike over minimum wage, electricity tariff
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Friday declared a nationwide strike beginning from Monday, June 3, 2024, over the inability to agree, with the federal government, on a new minimum wage and hike in electricity tariff. The strike is expected to affect Lagos, the country's commercial capital. The unions had rejected the federal government's offer of a N60,000 minimum wage instead proposing a N615,000 minimum wage. In a press briefing, TUC Chairman, Comrade Festus Osifo, said the unions were calling on the federal government to be more responsive to the plight of the Nigerian worker. "We are calling on them, that the hardship we are currently facing is as a result of the policies that were brought about by this government, that we felt were not well thought out," he said.
