The Lagos State Government has introduced new fines for traffic violations, including running red lights and overspeeding. Under the updated regulations, drivers who run a red light will face a fine of N20,000, while those caught overspeeding will be fined N50,000.
To ensure effective enforcement of these penalties, the government has partnered with Huawei, a Chinese tech company, to deploy cameras on major roads across the city. These cameras are part of a broader surveillance network aimed at monitoring traffic law compliance. Key monitoring locations include Alapere-Ogudu Road, Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Allen Avenue Junction, and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, emphasized that this system is not intended to be punitive but to encourage responsible driving behavior and reduce accidents on the roads. “The goal is simple: to save lives, protect property, and create an orderly transportation environment,” Osiyemi said. …
