Lagos driver faces reckless driving charges after fatal accident

The charges brought against Awosanya by the police are said to contravene Sections 51, 52, and 111 of the Road Traffic Laws of Lagos State, 2018.

A 38-year-old driver, Tosin Awosanya, appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Thursday, facing charges of reckless driving and driving without a license.

The accused, residing at No.13 Busare St., off AIT Road, Alagbado, Lagos, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to ASP Raji Akeem, the prosecutor, the alleged offences occurred on Nov. 13, 2023, at Ajala Bus Stop, Abule Egba Road, Lagos. Akeem informed the court that the defendant recklessly drove, resulting in the death of a pedestrian, Gloria Eberechukwu, aged 55.

The charges brought against Awosanya by the police are said to contravene Sections 51, 52, and 111 of the Road Traffic Laws of Lagos State, 2018. 

Chief Magistrate Mrs Bola Osunsanmi granted bail to the defendant, setting it at N500,000 with two sureties in a like sum. 

The case is scheduled for mention on Feb. 5.
