KAI demolishes 54 illegal shanties under Eko Bridge

The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) on Monday dismantled 54 illegal shanties housing 84 occupants and eight makeshift toilets under Eko Bridge in Ebute-Ero.

Punch reported that Corps Marshal Maj. Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (retd), who led the operation, said the Elegbeta Water Channel beneath the bridge had become home to miscreants and illegal occupants who frequently dumped refuse into the lagoon and engaged in open defecation.

He shared that these activities activated “the base of the bridge as a criminal hideout and encouraging open defecation, urination; and we swung into action after serving a seven-day abatement notice which was not adhered to.”

Cole credited the operation’s success to the support of the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, and emphasised KAI’s commitment to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda for a cleaner and greener Lagos.
